“Ahh, you finally fixed that!” — SnipSnap 2.1

“It’s about time,” was my wife’s assessment of SnipSnap 2.1, which came out this weekend. “It fixes all the things that were wrong with the app.”

“Wha-wha-what?!” was my response. “You never told me it was broken!”

Turns out that none of the things she was referring to were horrendously bad bugs or issues that got in the way of redeeming coupons. But they sure made SnipSnap a little less easy to use. Things like auto-deleting expired coupons, or previewing coupons before snipping. We’d started to hear from more and more users that these were persistent problems with the app, and hurting the overall experience. So now, with our 2.0 revamp fully stable, we started addressing them. Here are just a few of the ones we tackled in v 2.1:

1. Coupon Preview. You can now tap on any thumbnail image in search or coupon lists to pull up a quick preview of the coupon (front and back sides). You shouldn’t try to redeem from this, since you don’t get the clean version of the barcode and can’t zoom in on images. But it makes searching for good quality coupons a whole lot easier.

2. Option to automatically delete coupons. You’ll find this in the Settings screen. We never wanted to make the presumption that all expired coupons should be purged, since you can often still use expired coupons. But so many users have asked for it, we figured it should be an option. If popular, we may prompt all users to set this on or off.

3. Another option, when editing your coupon list, to delete all expired. This is the more manual way to purge out expired coupons. I had hundreds of expired ones in my account, and I personally prefer manually killing them out this way.

4. Removed most bad coupons from search. If a coupon doesn’t have a barcode, but should (because the store’s coupons always have them), you shouldn’t see it in search. Same goes for loyalty and reward coupons, which can’t be shared. We undertook a massive effort to purge most of these from the search results. You won’t lose them from your account, of course, but we don’t want other users snipping ones like these that are unlikely to work. This has already had a dramatic improvement in store success ratings.

5. User search. If you want to find friends, you can now look them up by name or email.

That’s really just the small fraction of the total improvements in version 2.1, but if you’re anything like my wife, I hope you’ll agree that we fixed an awful lot! And hey, if there’s anything else that’s bugging you, please don’t be quietly complicit — tell us!

We may not be able to have things like Manufacturer Coupons ready for version 2.2 or 2.3, but we’d love to hear anything at all that you think would make SnipSnap better. Post them here, to an iTunes review, or email me at ted [at] snipsnap [dot] it.
